GDV (Gas Discharge Visualization), Konstantin Korotkov's instrumented descendant of Kirlian corona photography, places a fingertip in a high-voltage field and photographs the corona discharge that results, then reads that glow as a map of organ health, emotion, and “energy of consciousness.” Developed at ITMO in St. Petersburg and sold as the Bio-Well camera, it sits in the Sensing Physics family — and it is another clean case of a real instrument carrying an interpretation that testing did not support.

The real substrate — corona discharge is real electrodynamics

The physical event the camera captures is genuine. Apply a strong electric field to a fingertip and you get a corona discharge — the ionization of air at the skin's surface — which is real, measurable electrodynamics and produces a real image. There is nothing imaginary about the photograph. What the corona actually reflects, though, are mundane variables: skin moisture and conductivity, contact, and pressure. The “phantom leaf” effect once offered as evidence of a persistent biofield is an imaging artifact. So the substrate is kept — a corona is a corona — while the question of what, if anything, it can validly be read for stays open.

Claim vs evidence — why grade F

The claim is that features of the fingertip corona map onto organ health, emotional state, and a measurable “energy field.” This has no independent validation; a Polish study failed to establish the claimed relationship between the corona parameters and the states they are said to index. That is a negative result against a specific claim, which is what grade F records — tested and not confirmed, rather than merely unstudied. The corona is real; the biofield-diagnosis reading of it is what failed. A real corona image does not promote a reading that did not replicate, and a failed reading does not make the corona unreal. Tier, grade, and plausibility are independent here, which is exactly why a flat “not supported” label would mislead.

Regulatory — safety, not efficacy

The regulatory footprint is a textbook case of registration not meaning efficacy. The device is not FDA-cleared for diagnosis; in the EU it carries CE marking as wellness; in Russia it appears on the medical-device registry — a safety listing, not a finding of diagnostic efficacy. It is not found in China and not listed in Australia. A safety registration says the device will not hurt you; it says nothing about whether the corona means what the marketing claims. One commercial note belongs on the record: Bio-Well has been distributed via the QNET multi-level-marketing channel, an integrity red flag independent of the physics. Lineage — the post-Soviet strand

GDV descends from the post-Soviet branch of the energy-medicine tradition mapped on the lineage page — Korotkov's instrumentation of Kirlian corona photography, a distinct strand from the Abrams-era radionics root that fed EAV and Vega. It shares the corona-discharge substrate with other biofield-imaging claims while standing on its own measurement physics.
